The Deben
This project is one I worked on mostly during 2022 as a submission for the Associate distinction (ARPS) of the Royal Photographic Society. The images were all made within a few miles of Woodbridge on the banks of the Deben whenever there was a chance of mist on the river. ARPS submissions require a panel of 15 images that are a “cohesive body of work that depicts and communicates the aims and objectives set out in the Statement Intent”.
In April 2023 the Society awarded the distinction.
The process of producing the body of work isn’t easy but is well worth it. I chose to submit my images as prints (which itself was a learning curve). The panel is intended to be viewed in three rows of five images as shown below. (they may be rearranged if viewing on smaller screens.)
Statement of intent
The River Deben is one of the most picturesque rivers in the East of England. This small tidal estuary is the home to a variety of subtle landscapes which have become a haven for recreational use.
These images show the quieter side of the Deben – the peaceful moments of calm when big skies and morning colours are reflected in calm, sometimes still, waters. When isolated boats stand out against backgrounds of serene morning mists and warm light with just occasional ripples to remind us the surface isn’t glass. Where empty buoys wait before the activities of the day begin and dedicate shades provide the softest of textures.
This panel presents these moments of tranquility using the richness and subtly of low morning sunlight and mists to illuminate and transform these scenes.
